Stand Up Tunes for Sit Down Band

Commissioned by the Minnesota State Band

Stand Up Tunes for Sit Down Band is a spirited and audience-engaging composition written to celebrate community, place, and the joy of live music. Premiered at the Sinclair Lewis Park bandshell in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, the work was performed as part of a State grant initiative supporting performances in outstate locations. The piece playfully blurs the line between formal concert tradition and informal outdoor music-making, inviting both performers and listeners into an energetic, approachable experience. Designed for a seated concert band yet full of movement, character, and momentum, Stand Up Tunes for Sit Down Band reflects the composer’s commitment to accessible, vibrant music that connects deeply with local communities and public spaces.

The Selby Avenue Brass Band is led by Tom Wells who writes and arranges a lot of Selby Avenue Brass Band music. He goes about it differently depending on whether Thomassina Petrus is singing with the group. When Tom talked to Phil Nusbaum, Tom first told of his favorite writing scenario.
