Selby Ave. JazzFest

When Mychael Wright and Tom Wells became neighbors in 2003, they had no idea where it would lead. Wright had founded the Selby Ave. JazzFest a couple years earlier, just after he and his wife Stephanie opened Golden Thyme Coffee & Cafe at the corner of Selby and Milton Street. Wells was a musician, and the two men soon discovered they shared a love of jazz. Wells has been a part of the JazzFest ever since, with his band leading the parade that opens the festival and later performing on stage.

Selby Ave. Brass Band

SABB plays a variety of music in the spirit of New Orleans including jazz, funk, soul and R&B.

The Selby Avenue Brass Band brings a unique voice to the Minneapolis / St. Paul music scene.

SABB is led by Tom Wells, tubist, arranger & composer and music educator in the Twin Cities area. Tom’s compositions and arrangement fuel a band comprised of enthusiastic and experienced musicians (including a couple of Grammy winners). While our musical roots come from the streets of New Orleans we expand from that genre into many others.

Manchester Riverfolk Festival

2002

For a period of about 10 years, Thomas Wells included some tap dancing in his performances. He has since hung up the shoes.  “But I had some fun with it.”

Graduate Recital

1993

For the 1992-1993 school year my wife and I both took Sabbaticals from Minneapolis Public Schools and, with a 6th grader and 2nd grader in tow, we moved to Bloomington Indiana where I completed the Master of Jazz Studies at Indiana University. This video is the culmination of that year. I was nominated for a Performer’s Certificate after this performance. Many thanks to David Baker and Dominic Spera in the Jazz Department, and also to the late tuba professor and originator of the Merry Tuba Christmas series, Harvey Phillips.
